Textiles Art Techniques with Jessica Grady
Textiles Art Techniques Workshop
This textile short course has been designed to take you through some of the basics for textile art creation, starting with looking a colour and pattern on paper, how that translates into stitches - then to embellishments and finally onto a finished textile art design.
Each class also works as a stand alone workshop so you are also welcome to pick and choose individual classes.

This class is all about having a go with mark-making and pattern ideas to create a series of designs on paper. Absolutely no drawing experience is required! The workshop is focused on layering materials, exploring colour and shapes - and looking at how this could be taken forward into textiles and stitch. Week 2 - Decorative Embroidery Stitches (2 hours)

Stitches we will learn include, blanket stitch, french knots, chain stitch and couching as well as ideas for adding fringe and looped textures with thread. In the workshop you will create a fabric sampler detailing each of the stitches and the variations you can create using contemporary materials. You will experiment with interesting materials such stitching with ribbon, wire and unconventional threads as well as traditional materials. This class is suitable for those wanting to learn something new - and embroidery is a great stress-relieving way to spend a couple of hours!
Week 3 - Creative Embellishment Design with Recycled Materials (2 hours)
This class is a step on from embroidery - looking at the potential of creative embellishments and the huge array of materials that you can use to create your own unique creations. Using recycled and waste materials such as plastic packaging, fabric scraps, painted washers and plastic tubing. You will learn different ways to create your own sequins and beads, and also how to create 3D effects on fabric using folding, pleating and stitch techniques. You will leave the workshop with a fabric sampler documenting a selection of techniques and materials. All materials are provided.
Week 4 - Mandala Design Textile Hoop (3 hours)
This 3 hour workshop will combine all of the techniques and ideas of colour, pattern and texture to help you create your own mandala inspired textile art design. You will add your own embellishments, decorative stitches and design ideas - those who have attended the sketchbook session could also bring along some of their paper pages to be cut up into decorative sequins to add to the mandala designs. Working in an embroidery hoop will give you a frame for your finished textile art piece so that you can take it home to display with pride. All materials are provided and this class is also suitable for beginners in textiles art.
